When the BAFTAs were awarded earlier this year we had a bit of a nag at the inconcistancy of the awards. Our issue was with British film Atonement - a film we loved - winning Best Film while This Is England - a film that filled us with a new hope for the future of British cinema - won Best British Film.
How, we asked, could This is England be a better 'British film' than Atonement but not a better 'Film'? We were confused.
And we still are.
Not because Shane Meadows has followed up his This is England BAFTA success by deservedly winning the Michael Powell Award for Best New British Feature Film with his incredible upcoming drama Somers Town at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, but because a mysterious poll reported this morning by ITN has named Four Weddings and a Funeral the Best British Movie of All Time.
We hate to be kill-joys and we know that Four Weddings brought bucket-loads of joy and happiness to many a miserable life, but the Best? Of all time?
What do you think?
